Spring is here! The snowdrops have come and gone, and the daffodils are up and bobbing their yellow heads. That’s how you know it’s time to think about spring cleaning for decks and fences. Spring and fall are arguably the best times to spruce up your outdoor living features, as they provide cool but sunny weather and a comfortable climate for outdoor work. Here’s your guide for spring cleaning for decks and fences!

Spring Cleaning for Decks

Spring cleaning for decks depends greatly on the deck’s material. If you have a wood deck, then you will need to clean and stain it. If it is vinyl or composite decking, then cleaning is what you’ll mainly need to do. In general, you will want to do the following:

  • Remove all furniture, planters, decor, etc., from the deck.
  • Cover surrounding plants with tarps, plastic sheets, or cloth for protection.
  • You can use a pressure washer at about 500-600 psi to blast off dirt. Alternatively, you can scrub the deck with a soft-bristled brush and warm, soapy water.
  • If applicable, use a commercial or natural cleaner to remove stubborn stains, mold, or mildew.
  • If a cleaner is used, rinse off the deck and let it dry completely.
  • For wood decks, sand down rough spots and apply a stain with a sealer to bring back its beautiful color and protect it from dirt and stains.

Spring Cleaning for Fences

Spring cleaning for fences is similar; it’s all about the material. Wood, vinyl, composite, steel, and aluminum are all possible materials. What are the steps for spring cleaning the fence?

  • Trim back or remove plant growth touching or covering the fence.
  • Power wash the fence between 500 and 1500 psi, depending on the material. Power washing applies to wood, composite, and vinyl fences.
  • Otherwise, you can scrub down the fence with soapy water, rinse it thoroughly, and let it dry.
  • If you see stubborn stains, mold, or mildew on the fence, use a specialized cleaner.
  • If your fence is rusting, remove the rust and paint over the cleaned area.
