Plants make a deck come alive. Ready to spruce up your deck for spring?

With the spring season upon us and warmer days approaching, you are likely looking to ready your backyard deck for another season of lovely days outdoors. Aside from ensuring the deck is structurally sound and clean, decorations truly make the deck a place you want to be. Nothing brings a deck to life like plants, fake or real; here are a few ideas to spruce up your deck with plants this spring.

Ways to Spruce up Your Deck with Plants

Potted Plants

Potted plants are the go-to answer. They are one of the easiest solutions. However, some plants will need aeration at the bottom, so you will need a plant pot with a drainage hole at the bottom and an earthenware, plastic, or ceramic pot dish under it to catch the moisture.

Deck Railing Plant Boxes

Deck railing planters stay out of the way but give your deck a lovely plant border. It’s popular to put annuals in planters like these, such as pansies, but you can also use them to grow your favorite vegetables. Just make sure the squirrels don’t get to them!

Built-In Planters

At Mid-Atlantic Deck & Fence, we have built decks with built-in plant boxes. They could be on either side of your deck stairs, in a corner, or behind built-in deck benches. If you are a fan of the built-in look, then built-in planters would be excellent. You can use them for annuals, perennials, produce, or all of the above.

Hanging Baskets

If your deck includes a gazebo, a pergola, or a pavilion, then hanging plant baskets will help bring them to life without taking up floor space. Hanging plant baskets are especially beautiful when the flowers and foliage cascade over the edges.

Integrated Landscaping

You could also make the deck and your landscaping feel like one area. If you have a large tree, you could build a deck around it. If you have a lush, private garden, you could put a floating deck in the midst.
