How do you keep beautiful composite decking looking new? Follow this guide!

Composite decking is one of the low-maintenance deck material options on the market that provides a beautiful look and a durable quality. Unlike natural wood, it requires little maintenance. Even so, a lack of care and effort can lead your composite deck to be full of stains that degrade its surface. Here’s how to clean composite decking so that it will look great throughout the decades.

Choose a Calm, Mild Day to Clean Composite Decking

The first thing to do is to set out to clean your deck once or twice a year. If you notice spills or stains, it is best to clean them up at once. Otherwise, you should aim to do a deep clean once or twice a year, in the spring and fall. Choose a day that is not windy. A cloudy or sunny day will do, but work in smaller sections on a sunny day to avoid soapy water drying on your deck before you get to wash it off.

Remove All Items from the Deck

When you deep clean a composite deck, remove all items from its surface. Remove all furniture, potted plants, rugs, mats, and anything else from your deck so you can clean the entire surface thoroughly and at once.

Washing by Hose

A garden hose, blower, or broom is generally all you need to remove debris and dirt from the surface that are not ingrained. It is important to remove debris and even dust, as they could leave stains or discolor the composite deck’s surface.

Washing by Hand

Meanwhile, if your deck does have stains, a little elbow grease and the right cleaning solution are all it takes to get rid of them. The best solution is to follow your deck manufacturer’s instructions on how to clean the deck. In general, non-toxic dish soap mixed with warm water and a soft-bristled scrubbing brush are all you need to remove food stains, mold, mud, and more. Other recommended cleaners include white vinegar and “deck brighteners.”

Washing by Pressure Washer

A pressure washer can replace your elbow grease and do a fantastic job as long as its pressure is under 1500 psi. Use a fan tip to clean more of the surface at once. If you have any questions about how to clean a composite deck, Mid-Atlantic Deck & Fence is here to help!
