While the weather is still fluctuating in Maryland as usual, it is decidedly getting colder as we march towards Thanksgiving Day. At least a couple of weeks out is a good time to get ahead of the curve and start planning for the big day, particularly if you are hosting. Why not enjoy the lovely fall weather and host an outdoor Thanksgiving dinner? Here’s how to do it like a pro.
Choose Your Outdoor Setting
The first step is to choose your location. Do you have a patio, a deck, a screened porch, or a gazebo? The location must be large enough to accommodate all your guests and be close enough to the house to transfer dishes, etc., easily to and from it.
Set up Enough Seats
On a related note, source the table and chairs that you will use for your holiday feast. You might already have a patio dining set available. Otherwise, you could use a folding table or two and enough folding chairs to seat everyone.
Provide Easy Access from the Table to the Food
In an outdoor setting, it’s easier to serve the food buffet-style. In late November, you will have to deal with keeping the food warm. You could either keep all the food indoors in the kitchen or on a buffet table beside the dining table. If it is a particularly temperate day and you have enough food-warming plates to keep on the table, you could also try serving it directly on the dining table.
Provide Outdoor Heating
Even with warm food and drinks, it can still be chilly. Your guests shouldn’t have to wear gloves and puffy coats and hats to enjoy their Thanksgiving meal. You can make the place more comfortable with tabletop patio heaters, standing patio heaters, and more. If you have an outdoor fireplace, you are mainly set!
Prepare for the Weather
Does the weather forecast call for rain on Thanksgiving Day? Be prepared! If you have a covered pergola, pagoda, screened porch, or sunroom, it’s still possible to host an outdoor Thanksgiving dinner. Otherwise, inside will have to do.
