This customer in Severna Park Maryland needed a little privacy on the rear property line but did not want to total close in the entire yard with a privacy fence. love the look.

Which fence style works best for your yard?

A fence is not just a property border. It is more than a series of wood or PVC panels enclosing your home. It is a part of the picture. It influences your yard’s ventilation, privacy, security, and curb appeal. It can stand out or blend in. It can be the walls of your fortress or simply an effective marker of your property boundaries. The fence style makes all the difference. Follow these steps to choose a fence style for your home! If you are in central Maryland, Mid-Atlantic Deck & Fence is happy to be of service.

Steps to Choose a Fence Style for Your Home

Have a Budget

The first step is to have a budget for what you can afford. The budget will influence your fence’s material and style to an extent. You can research the average cost for a fence of a particular style and material in your area; you can also ask for a quote or two from local contractors. Many contractors offer financing as well. Your ideal fence design may influence how you save up and budget for the project.

Decide on Future Fence Maintenance

A fence is a long-term investment that is worth maintaining. It’s understandable if you don’t want to do so much maintenance every year. How much time and effort are you ready to put into your fence? A wood fence needs routine washing, sanding, and sealing, while other fence materials only need washing. On the other hand, composite, aluminum, and vinyl fences can cost more.

Consider Your Fence’s Purposes

The fence’s purpose is the most important part of choosing a fence style that suits your home. You might even go with more than one fence style, as different sides of your property may need different levels of privacy, ventilation, etc. The top fence purposes would be privacy and security.

Research Different Fence Styles

Next, know your fence styles. Wood, composite, and vinyl fences share styles for the most part, but aluminum is in a category of its own. As for the former options, popular fence styles are the following:

  • Picket
  • Privacy
  • Split-rail
  • Lattice
  • Paddock

You can find different styles within each category pertaining to fence panels and fence post caps.

Visit a Fence Showroom

Do you like a hands-on approach? Visit the local fence showroom of a great fence contractor to see the options for yourself.

How Much Does a Pergola Cost in 2023?

Pergolas: yay or nay? These pros and cons can help you decide.

Pergolas are lovely outdoor features. They are stately and monumental, perfect for providing shade by your pool or over your walkway. Mid-Atlantic Deck & Fence builds vinyl pergolas that are built to last; in fact, we fabricate our own vinyl on our site in Gambrills, MD. The question is, is a pergola right for your property? Check out the pros and cons of pergolas!

Pros of Pergolas

Provide Some Shade

Pergolas provide some shade, even though they have slats for roofing and not solid timber and shingles. In summer, they provide shade throughout the day but still let plenty of sunshine through. It’s the best of both worlds.

Make a Statement

Pergolas make a statement, no matter what form they come in. They can cover walkways, backyard entrances, or portions of decks and patios. They can stand alone, be attached to a house, or bridge between two buildings.

Create a Retreat

Pergolas are great for creating elegant retreats. They are just substantial and enough to give some shade without looking heavy. People use them to shelter poolside retreats, outdoor dining, outdoor seating, and hot tubs.

Do It Affordably

Pergolas are relatively affordable and easy to install. For the most accurate idea of what to expect, contact your local pergola contractor for an estimate. The national average is just over $4,000.

Cons of Pergolas

No Roof

If you want a roof overhead when it rains, a pergola isn’t a great choice unless you put clear plastic panels over the slats. Otherwise, expect your outdoor furniture and rug to be sopping wet when it rains.

May Not Be Appropriate for Your Space

A pergola might just not meet your needs as well as another option. If you’re looking for a more enclosed outdoor living space with shelter, a screened porch, a pavilion, or a gazebo might be better.

No Protection from Bugs and Harsh Temperatures

Pergolas are not screened in and can’t be, given they have no roofs. A pergola cannot protect you from the cold, the heat, or the mosquitoes. At most, you can add outdoor curtains, panel roofing, and a fire pit.

Pergolas Need Maintenance

Having an outdoor feature means it will be another thing to maintain. That being said, vinyl pergolas are easier to maintain than wood ones; all they need is an occasional wash.

Top Activities You Can Do on a Deck

Interested in composite decking? See its possibilities here!

Composite decks are one of the most trusted decking materials on the market. Composite is a great choice if you want a deck that looks like wood without the need for sanding, staining, and repairs. It’s resistant to rot, mold, insect damage, and more. Plus, it has good friction underfoot. We’ve got these composite decking design ideas to help you get started.

Composite Decking Design Ideas: Layout

Extension of the House

Your composite deck can be an extension of your house. Your back door can lead to an outdoor living space that is almost seamless from the house. If you have wide back doors, you can double extend your living space even more by opening them up onto the deck on nice days.

A Floating Retreat

Some composite decks are freestanding and sit in the middle or at the back of the backyard. It can be a floating retreat away from the house, giving you sanctuary. Add shelter, some outdoor furniture, and some plants, and you have a lovely composite deck.

A Cascading Outdoor Living Space

If you have a high elevation deck or a sloped yard, a tiered composite deck might be best for your property. Its multiple levels can be separate outdoor living spaces.

A Poolside Plateau

Do you need a pool deck? Why not try composite? This durable material made of wood fibers and plastic will withstand wet, hot days around the pool and is easy to clean.

Composite Decking Design Ideas: Additions

A Covered Outdoor Living Space

Stay cool and comfortable with a pergola or pavilion over your deck. Pergolas have slatted roofs, and pavilions have solid roofs. You could also choose a large outdoor umbrella or a retractable awning.

Built-In Lighting

Built-in lighting allows you to spend time on your deck into the evening. You can also time the lighting to come on in the evening automatically so there is always visibility.

Built-In Seating

Built-in seating on decks can look like built-in benches or sunken seating areas. It can be more creative than you think!

An Outdoor Kitchen

There’s nothing like eating meals cooked on the grill. If having an outdoor kitchen is your backyard goal, composite decking is a great surface on which to build one.

Incorporated Landscaping

Plants make everything manmade feel more lively. If you love plants, incorporate them into your deck with built-in planters, pots, or garden beds.

Unique Residential Fence Ideas

Your vinyl fence can be unique with these color ideas!

Vinyl fences are one of the most popular fences for their low maintenance needs, longevity, and sturdiness. When you see a home with a vinyl fence around its backyard, it usually communicates luxury. Because vinyl is an outdoor-grade PVC plastic, it can take on a multitude of different colors and does not need repainting. Below are some unique vinyl fence color options you might never have heard of before and how you can choose the best option for your vinyl fence design.

Basic Vinyl Fence Color Options

The most popular vinyl fence colors include the following:

  • White
  • Tan
  • Brown (in different shades)
  • Gray (in different shades)
  • Red
  • Black

Less common are dark blue and green vinyl fences. Colors you are highly unlikely to ever see in a typical residential vinyl fence would be yellow, orange, pink, purple, or any neon color. The reason is that fences are usually there to protect the property, blend in with the landscape, or at least be cohesive with the home’s exterior colors and pavement colors. We will discuss that in more detail soon.

Unique Vinyl Fence Color Combinations

While you can have a vinyl fence in one solid color, which is perfectly good, you can also add interest by using two colors.

What are the popular vinyl fence color combinations?

  • White and gray
  • White and tan
  • White and red
  • White and black
  • White and blue
  • Tan and brown
  • Tan and black
  • Tan and red
  • Brown and black

What’s even more interesting is how these colors are combined. Often, a two-tone vinyl fence will have a white or tan border with darker fence panels. For an even more unique look, you can:

  1. Reverse the colors.
  2. Paint the rails the same color as the fence posts and top and bottom rails.
  3. Have only the fence posts be a different color than the panels.

Choosing the Right Color(s) for Your Vinyl Fence

As mentioned before, the vinyl fence color you choose will depend on the overall color scheme of your exterior property. If you have a gray house and a gray driveway, a gray and white fence would work marvelously.

It also depends on how much you want your fence to stand out. The more muted and neutral your fence looks, the more it will blend in with the property.

Leaning fence? Keep it upright with the right method.

A leaning fence post can be not just annoying to look at if you have OCD but a possible threat to your yard’s safety and fence’s fate. If the fence post ultimately falls over, it can take down the rest of the fence. There is more than one way to fix a leaning fence post, though, so we will discuss general steps to take to help you get your fence completely upright again.

Evaluate the Cause of the Leaning Fence Post

A fence post is the main structural support for a fence. Its base is encased in concrete, and it holds up the fence panels on either side of it. A leaning fence post could have become this way due to one of these reasons:

  • The fence post disconnected from the base
  • Someone or something knocked into the fence post
  • The fence post is rotting
  • A tree root grew under the fence post
  • The soil shifted
  • The fence was installed incorrectly
  • The fence is of poor quality
  • The fence is old

You can boil the many possibilities down to three main issues:

  1. The fence is deteriorating
  2. The soil has shifted
  3. The fence base is cracked or broken

Find the Most Fitting Solution

  1. If the fence post is rotting, warping, etc., you will need to replace the post, granted that the rest of the fence is still in good condition. In this case, install supporting beams to hold up the fence panels while you replace the post. Remove and replace the post and its concrete base.
  2. If the soil has shifted and the post and base are in otherwise good condition, you can realign the fence without replacing anything. You can straighten it by digging around the base, pushing it upright, and refilling and regrading the soil. Alternatively, you can straighten it gradually with ropes. The soil will settle itself. Metal brackets can help keep fence posts in place but aren’t necessary if the posts are already attached to the concrete.
  3. If the fence base and post are broken, you will need to replace them both and remove anything that has caused it to break, like a tree root.

Keep your wood deck looking great with these spring cleaning tips!

Wood decks are resilient to harsh weather. They weather the changing temperatures, the rain, the hot sun, and the strong winds. Over time, wood decks will wear out, but you can keep them in great condition and add a few more years to their life just by keeping them clean. Follow these wood deck cleaning tips to help you enjoy your deck for longer.

Wood Deck Cleaning Tips for Spring

Sweep the Deck

The first step is to sweep away large, loose debris from your wood deck. Sweep away the old fall leaves, dirt, etc., from the surface. Dispose of any and all trash properly. Now all that’s left will be the dirty, dull deck that will soon be fresh and sparkling new once you’re done with it.

Cover Nearby Plants

Before you begin, cover any nearby plants with a tarp to protect them from detergents you’ll use to wash the deck. Make sure that your wood deck detergent is as environmentally safe as possible.

Scrub the Deck with an Appropriate Detergent

Next, find a wood deck detergent that will address your deck’s stains and ingrained dirt. The simplest solution is white vinegar and water, but you can also find affordable commercial deck cleaning products that will help remove dirt and stains.

Apply the detergent onto your wood deck, following instructions if it is a commercial cleaning product. Use a scrubbing brush with a long handle to activate the cleaner into the wood. Allow it to sit long enough to remove all the dirt and rinse off.

Pressure Wash the Deck Carefully

When you rinse off the deck, you can use a hose or a pressure washer. If you use a pressure washer, do not set it to above 600 psi. 500 to 600 psi should be enough pressure to clean the wood without boring holes into it. After the deck is thoroughly clean, allow it to dry completely.

Seal the Deck

Sealing your deck rehydrates and protects the wood from rain, ultraviolet light, dirt, and spills. It is the final step in making your wood deck look good as new and stay looking great.

Chill out in your screened porch on a rainy Maryland day in these ways!

It’s a cold, rainy day, and you have no plans but to relax. If you have a sturdy screened porch, you have the bare bones for what you need to have a relaxing day. Even though screened porches are technically outdoor spaces, they can still be perfect for enjoying those rainy days. Check out these ideas for chilling in your screened porch on a sleepy Maryland day.

Have a Source of Warmth

First, you will want to have a source of warmth. In a screened porch, you have the option of adding a built-in fireplace or a fire pit that’s safe for enclosed areas. You can also put in patio heaters, a wood-burning stove, or radiant floor heating.

Keep Out the Rain

If it is a windy day, the rain can come into your screened porch and spray you while you’re trying to relax. It won’t be very comfortable. You can keep out the rain by adding removable clear vinyl screens, tapestries, outdoor-grade curtains, or a combination. Otherwise, it doesn’t hurt to let the cool air infiltrate the room.

Make It Homey

It can be harder to chill out in a place that doesn’t feel homey in some way. Add overhead lighting so you can have great visibility even at night, along with some floor or table lamps fit for outdoor use.

Aside from lighting, furnish the space with outdoor-grade furniture and rugs, making it look like an indoor room. Living potted plants are the finishing touch. Most species will love the ample sunlight. Just be sure to take them indoors when they can’t endure the cold.

Make a Hot Drink

Nothing is quite so relaxing on a cold, rainy day than a hot drink. Whatever your favorites are, they’re on the menu. If your screened porch has a fitting outlet, you can even use your electric kettle or coffee maker in the same room.

Do a Fun Activity

Sometimes, chilling out can mean simply sitting down with a hot drink and gazing outside. Other ways to chill in your screened porch include playing a game, crafting, reading a book, listening to music, or taking a nap.

If you can envision yourself in a screened porch like this, Mid-Atlantic Deck & Fence can help you make it happen. Read on for more rainy day ideas here.

Great choice, 6’ cedar vertical board privacy fence with top and bottom trim boards. Located in the community of Arundel on the bay in Annapolis Maryland.

Cedar fences are popular for a reason!

If you are thinking of getting a fence for any reason, you have to consider a cedar fence. At Mid-Atlantic Deck & Fence, you can find a variety of great fence materials, including wood, vinyl, composite, aluminum, and steel. Among the wood fences, you have pressure-treated pine, cedar, and exotic hardwoods like Ipe and Mahogany. What’s there to know about cedar fences?

What’s Great about Cedar Fences?

Natural Preservation

Cedarwood has a special natural property to it: an oil that repels some of our most formidable insect foes. This natural oil in cedar lumber repels cockroaches, termites, ants, ticks, and fleas. It doesn’t repel all insects, but concerning the ones it does, you can be sure that your new cedar fence will do its part to prevent fence rotting. Over time, the oils will fade, but their presence gives you a head start in fence preservation.

Natural Beauty

Cedar fences are beautiful whether they are new or old. You can keep them looking new with good maintenance. Cleaning, sanding, staining, and sealing the fence will help maintain its original color. If the sealer you use is clear, though, the UV rays will eventually turn it gray. Some people prefer the gray, weathered look, but you can preserve it with a colored stain if you wish.

Popular and in High Demand

Cedar fencing is Mid-Atlantic Deck & Fence’s most popular fence material! Cedar is a middle-of-the-road lumber that does not sacrifice in quality or affordability. It doesn’t have the preservative chemical treatment of pressure-treated pine, and it is not as hard to drill through as exotic hardwoods. It does its job well and is great for the Mid-Atlantic region.

Relatively Low Maintenance

It’s normal for people to let their fence be with no maintenance at all, but it will certainly help it last for longer if you do, even years longer. That being said, cedar fences are relatively low maintenance. You are likely to need to make repairs only after quite a few years.

How Much Do Cedar Fences Cost?

In 2024, a cedar fence could cost $7-$12 per linear foot. In February, Mid-Atlantic Deck & Fence is having a sale; cedar fences are the same price as pressure-treated pine for a limited time!

Control the temperature in your screened porch with these tips!

A screened porch can be the loveliest room in the house, and it’s considered an outdoor space! Home design has been all about bringing the indoors out and the outdoors in, and the screened porch combines these two modes of living seamlessly. You have the comfort of shelter, shade, and protection from insects while being exposed to outdoor temperatures, the wind, and lots of sunshine. If high or low temperatures worry you, try on these ideas for heating and cooling screened porches.

Heating for Screened Porches

Fireplace

A fireplace is an excellent option and a great way to give your outdoor living space a grounding focal point. A fireplace will provide warmth while channeling the smoke out of the screened porch and not the ceiling.

Wood-Burning Stove

A wood-burning stove is a smaller but effective option. You could even boil some water for tea or cook a soup on it. A wood-burning stove often sits in the corner of a room and has a chimney pipe that goes through the roof or sometimes a wall.

Infrared Heaters

Infrared patio heaters can sit on floors or tables or be mounted onto ceiling edges. These outdoor heaters radiate heat and help make chilly environments a lot more tolerable, especially when you use multiples and place them strategically.

Fire Pits

A fire pit fit for a screened porch can be your indoor-outdoor campfire or double as a coffee table when not in use. Choose a model that is suitable for enclosed spaces and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Cooling for Screened Porches

Ceiling Fans

In Maryland, there are a couple of months that almost seem unbearable. It’s sticky and hot, and no one wants to move. Even a screened porch can feel overwhelmingly warm. It doesn’t have to feel so bad when you have a ceiling fan fit for the space. Most screened porches have a ceiling fan to help circulate air. Some are central, while others are small and are mounted on the ceiling’s edges.

Portable Outdoor Air Conditioners

A portable outdoor air conditioner can also help significantly. Even though it’s outdoors, it still can help control the temperature. You can keep cool on even the hottest, most humid days!

Does your dog need a fence? Choose the best one with Mid-Atlantic Deck & Fence!

If you are thinking of getting a pet dog, you’ll want to pet-proof your house and yard. It should be as safe an environment as possible for your new beloved companion. A safe and secure backyard is a must-have, as it will allow your dog to roam freely while staying within bounds. There are electric fences for dogs and even invisible fences, but if you want an option that doesn’t zap your pet, here’s how to choose the best fence for your dog.

Does Your Dog Like to Explore?

Does your dog like to jump, dig, or squeeze through things to explore the great wide world? If you have an escape artist on your hands, or worry that your new puppy will squeeze through a fence with wide-spaced pickets, then a taller privacy fence might be the best option. A taller privacy fence will help limit distractions and the ability to dig under, climb over, or squeeze through to the other side. If your dog is trying to escape often, it may be a sign of boredom and call for more engagement.

Does Your Dog Get Aggressive toward Outsiders?

Your pet might also be aggressive toward outsiders. If you want a guard dog that will alert you to any stranger that passes, then you might not mind having a fence that sits a little lower. However, you do not want it so low that the dog can jump over it and harass its object of attention. You may even want an aluminum or chain-link fence, as they are both very strong without being overly expensive. If the distraction of passersby is too great, opt for a privacy fence. Of course, if your dog is showing behavioral problems, you’ll need to address it directly as well.

Does Your Dog Like to Greet People and Watch the World?

Perhaps your dog is perfectly docile and likes to watch the world go by, or maybe you want your new dog to have that visual interest when it’s in the backyard. You might even have a dog that loves to say hello to the locals. If so, a picket, chain-link, or aluminum fence works best, as does a low privacy fence.

Combine Your Fence Needs and Your Dog’s

Choosing a new fence is a big deal. It should work for all your needs and not your pet’s only. Remember that you can choose to surround your yard with more than one fence style for the most functionality.
