Vinyl vs. Composite Fencing

Vinyl vs. Composite Fencing

What’s the difference between vinyl and composite fencing? Find out here.

One of the most common home improvement projects for Maryland homes is fence installation. A fence provides you with added home security, an enclosed backyard that helps keep kids and pets safe, and a higher property value. Depending on the type of fence, you can also gain some privacy. Wood has always been a popular favorite among Maryland homeowners, but two other materials are also worth considering. Here is what to know about vinyl and composite fencing.

Composite Fencing

Composite fencing is made of wood chips, sawdust, and plastic and is considered a “green” product because its natural ingredients are recycled. Composite is a hardy material that can last for many long years with little to no maintenance.

One must be aware, though, that there are different types of composite fencing in terms of quality. Low-quality composite does not fully insulate the wood grains and will allow them to expand, contract, and warp due to moisture and harsh weather. High-quality ones will not give you these problems. Of course, it is significantly more expensive than natural wood fencing upfront, but because of the minimal maintenance, you may actually spend far less in the long run.

This fencing option comes in plenty of styles and colors, just like natural wood can. Cleaning will keep away mold and mildew and help preserve your fence for longer.

Vinyl Fencing

Vinyl fencing, on the other hand, consists purely of PVC plastic, otherwise known as polyvinyl chloride. It is known for its durability, low maintenance needs, and easy installation. Vinyl fences consist of lightweight, molded panels that lock together without the need for nails or screws.

Once again, quality will determine how satisfied you are with the fence in the long-term. Vinyl fencing from earlier eras might have faded, cracked, and warped more easily. Some may be susceptible to mold and mildew. It does not hurt to clean your vinyl fence routinely to prevent such build-ups, but be sure to look for a quality product to avoid regrets. Given that you find this, you can choose from any style or color you’d like.
