Signs You Need a New Fence

Signs You Need a New Fence

Is it time for a wood fence replacement? Here’s how you’ll know.

There comes a time when every wooden fence must be replaced. Eventually, you will need to replace yours with something new. They can last quite a long time with proper maintenance, but below, you will see several sure signs that you need a new fence.

It’s 30 Years Old

One can estimate that a regular wood fence will last around 15 years. However, with proper maintenance, one can expect it to last for 20 years or more. If you know that yours has been around for the last 20 or even 30 years, you might want to consider upgrading it. Over time, the wood can lose its structural integrity, losing its performance ability.

Extensive Deterioration

Extensive deterioration could occur due to old age, neglect, or perhaps a natural disaster. Over time, UV rays, harsh weather, flooding, mold, and insects can all get to a wood fence, leading it to fall apart. If it is rotten with neglect or damage from mold, rot, or insects, you might need a new one altogether.

Extensive Rotting

As mentioned, extensive rotting is one of the major maladies your border could suffer one day. If you notice wooden posts, boards, and rails rotting, the damage might cost more than it’s worth. There is no way to restore rotten wood; it must go. To help prevent rotting, one should seal the fence every few years and fix puddles at its base if need be.

Extensive Warping

If your wood fence is not rotting, check for warping. You won’t miss it, and your neighbors won’t either. A warped, shrunken fence means you can see into your yard. You might even have holes in your wood boards. At this rate, it isn’t even doing its job anymore, especially if it’s designed for privacy. Like rotten wood, warped wood cannot be mended.

Friendly Reminder

Keep in mind that you need a new fence only when the damage is so extensive that repairs are too costly. Limited warping, rotting, or other deterioration can stand repairing, given that the rest of it is intact.
