Girl Scout Troop 729 to Celebrate Earth Day in a "Golden" Way!
Girl Scout Troop 729 has been working very hard on their Gold Award, the highest and most prestigious award in Girl Scouting. For thei final project, high school seniors Laura Bardman (Mount de Sales,) Katherin Mosco (Archbishop Spalding,) Danielle Piazza (Seton Keough,) and Amanda Weisgerber (Institute of Notre Dame) chose to update the gardens of Locust Lodge, an assisted living facility located in Pasadena, Maryland.
The Troop enlisted the help of a local landscaper and fellow high school senior, Chris Mawn, who put their ideas on paper. Lowes of Glen Burnie, Mid-Atlantic Deck and Fence Co. of Gambrills, Top Trowel Highway Administration, and Miller's Minuteman Press of Hunt Valley have generously donated materials and manpower to make this project a reality.
Plans include cleaning-up and mulching existing gardens, finishing a walking path, building and installing two bird feeding stations and a butterfly garden, refurbishing several container gardens, and adding a new raised garden.
The girls have been working with the Science Club of St. Jane Frances School to grow some of the plants while teaching the students about giving back to the community and protecting our environment.
The Troop will be planting seedlings with the St. Jane Science Club on Thursday, April 17th, and will complete the remaining projects on Saturday, April 19th, just in time for Earth Day.
